What Happens During the First Visit?
At Wilderness Station Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Marty recommends scheduling your child’s first dental appointment the moment their first teeth begin to erupt. This is important to ensure their teeth are developing correctly and as the parents, learn how best to care for your little one’s teeth.
During this initial visit, our team will provide both you and your child with a tour of our office, going over equipment used, different services we offer, and introducing you to the different individuals who are a part of our team.
This visit will also include a special informational session with Dr. Marty. Using his years of experience and knowledge, he will discuss everything from your child’s diet, how to brush their teeth, practicing good oral habits, as well as address any questions or concerns you might have about your child’s teeth and gums. It might be beneficial to bring a list of questions with you to the appointment.
While the initial visit might seem like you’re spending a lot of time getting to know us, we believe it is an important part of building a relationship with you and your child. However, we also believe in making sure your little one’s newly erupted teeth look and feel their best, which is why we will provide a gentle pediatric dental checkup. This will include an x-ray and possible fluoride treatment with your approval. You will end your appointment by visiting with Dr. Marty and discussing the exam. He will inform you of anything he found that might require treatment. If so, a personalized treatment plan will be created for your child, which you can review prior to moving forward.
Tips to At-Home Care
Since your child will only be required to see us every six months, unless Dr. Marty believes more frequent exams are necessary, you’ll need to make sure you are keeping your child’s teeth and gums healthy at home. To do this, here are a few at-home tips to follow:
- Make sure to brush their teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head.
- Use only a smear (grain of rice) of toothpaste.
- Brush their teeth in the morning and at night before going to bed.
- Avoid giving your little one a bottle before bed unless it is water. If you give them anything other than water in their nighttime bottle, make sure to brush their teeth before putting them to bed.
- Limit the amount of juice and sweets your child eats, as this can cause cavities to develop early.
